This is a brief list of places I enjoy shooting street photography in downtown Vancouver. It is meant as a broad overview for people traveling in from out of town, and is not exhaustive by any means. Other than taking the water taxi to Granville Island all areas listed are within a short walk of each other, making them easily accessible for those staying downtown.
Here are some links and photos for the areas referred to above:
1 – Waterfront Station:
2 – Canada Place and Coal Harbour:
3 – Robson Street:
4 – Yaletown:
5 – Granville Island:
6 – English Bay:
7 – The Granville “Strip”:
8 – Chinatown:
9 – Gastown:
At the top right corner of the map is an area known as the downtown eastside. Here is a link to that area:
For the average traveller I would say this is an area to be avoided. Through my work I have spent a lot of time there over the years and have met some amazing people, but the truth is that it is an area rich in poverty, drug use, homelessness, and mental health issues… not the type of area the average tourist would want to spend a lot of time.
There are many other fabulous areas outside of the downtown core for street photography, including the Commercial drive area, Strathcona, etc. If you are staying for an extended period of time I highly recommend checking these areas out!
