Travel is a wonderful thing. It allows us to discover new places, to meet new people, to experience new customs and, of course, to make new memories. As photographers we are exposed to so many opportunities to create art while traveling that it can often be overwhelming: What gear should I bring? How do I plan my shots? What time should I be on location? How do I tell the story of this amazing place I am visiting? These questions, and many others, will be answered in “The Story of a City – A Travel Photography Workshop” which will be held in Toronto from July 15th – 19th, 2019.
Led by TWO Official Fujifilm X Photographers (brand ambassadors), you will spend time in the classroom learning different principles of photography as they apply to travel, on location shooting cityscapes & landscapes, on city streets making portraits & candid photos of life in the city, and in key iconic locations capturing detail shots that tie your story together. The end goal of this workshop is to present a photo essay that tells your story of Toronto, and to have the skills and knowledge to repeat this process anywhere in the world that you choose to visit.
The Toronto Edition of this workshop is kept very small (only 5 participants maximum, with 2 instructors) to ensure the best educational experience possible.
Early bird DISCOUNTED pricing is available until January 31st, 2019!
Monday, July 15th:
Our first session starts at 10am and will cover key concepts and techniques used in storytelling travel photography. A short break will be followed by a session on post production, where the instructors will each take a photo from capture to completion and discuss various techniques that they use in their processing.
This will be followed by our first daytime photowalk, a dinner break, and then we will shoot our first sunset / blue hour session of the workshop.
Tuesday, July 16th to Thursday, July 18th:
Each day may include up to 3 teaching sessions:
- A sunrise cityscape / landscape shoot. (5am – 8am). This session will be followed by a break for breakfast, post processing, and a nap if needed!
- We will re-group in downtown Toronto for our daytime session (1pm – 5pm) that will focus on shooting situations such as impromptu portraiture, “street style” documentary photography, and how to focus on the small but important detail shots that help you tell your story. This session will be followed by a dinner break.
- Finally, each day will end with a sunset / blue hour cityscape shooting session. (7pm – 10pm).
These will be long, busy days. Each session is optional, attendees can pick and chose which parts they wish to attend.
Friday, July 15th:
Friday morning will begin with our final sunrise shooting session of the workshop (5am – 8am), followed by time off to catch up on editing and sleep.
We will meet back in the classroom at 3pm for our final session together, which will begin with time to do any final post processing on your images (both instructors will be available for guidance as needed). This session will be followed by a group presentation and critique, where each participant will share their best work from the week and tell “their story” of Toronto. Instructor and peer feedback will be provided to help us all grow as artists.
The workshop will finish no later than 6pm, when we will all go for one final group dinner together!
About the instructors
Wynn is a restless observer of the world around him, seeing stories everywhere. It is this curiosity and observation that makes him a sought-after photographer, speaker and educator. Each week, Wynn encourages his college students to open their eyes and hearts to experience the world around them while creating compelling documentaries with sensitivity and passion.
From the High Arctic, Tibet, China, Greenland, India, Europe and numerous road trips around North America. Wynn has lived in caves, slums, on ice flows and in First Nations communities photographing the stories of diverse cultures, tragedy, triumph and love.
Spencer loves to share his knowledge and skills as a photographer with those attending his lectures, workshops and photo walks. Patient and understanding, he encourages those with whom he meets to strive for their personal visual potential, all the while having fun and enjoying the process.
Ian has been an educator for over twenty years, with formal post secondary education in how to teach adults, and currently offers group street photography workshops, private one on one photography workshops and photography education online with students around the world.
Collaborating with others and building relationships within the photography community are central themes for Ian. He loves the process of photography as much as he does the art that he creates, and loves to see others achieve their photographic and artistic goals.
