A Photographic Return to San Francisco

I start every year with a trip to San Francisco, a city that I have written about many times in the past.  It is a place I go to re-charge, to visit friends, to get inspired and, of course, to make new images.

Just before my last trip there I happened upon the following quote:

“I walk,

I look,

I see,

I stop,

I photograph.”

– Leon Levinstein

This perfectly sums up how I feel about San Francisco now.  I never make detailed plans when I am in the city, choosing instead to wander randomly for hours at a time.  I may shoot street photography for a few hours, grab a meal, then hop a bus somewhere to spend my evening making a new blue hour cityscape.  On other days I sit by the water and write for a while, then spend the afternoon focusing on making portraits.  There are also many days where I just put the camera away and live in the moment.  It is an instinctual, mindful, wonderful way to approach photography.  I walk, I look, I see, I stop, I photograph.  And, I always come home inspired to tackle the year ahead of me.

Here is an eclectic mix of new images from the city by the bay.  Everything here was taken with a Fujifilm X-T3 and the 23mm f/2 lens.  It’s all I need.

Best wishes,

Ian

Perfect Moments

There are times in our lives that are simply perfect, moments where we hold our breath for fear of disturbing what is happening around us.  These times are rare, fleeting, but they nourish us and make us stronger.

Such was the case a few nights ago, when I was standing on a beach in Hawaii photographing the most beautiful sunset that I have ever seen.  A gentle breeze drove away the heat, music played in the background, my daughter swam in the ocean and I was doing what I love…. making photographs.

When the light was gone my daughter and I stayed a little bit longer, looking out onto the dark ocean and listening to the waves.

It was perfect.

I am back from this trip now, back to the world of photo editing, writing, podcasts and workshops.  I look forward to sharing much more with all of you very soon.

The Story of a City – Toronto Edition

Hello everyone!

I am so excited to finally announce a new travel photography workshop I have been working on for quite some time with fellow Official Fujifilm X Photographer Spencer Wynn.

Imagine spending a week in Toronto this summer photographing cityscapes, landscapes, candid images, portraits, detail shots and more.  Then, imagine editing them down into a cohesive story…. your story… of the week in Toronto.  All the while both Spencer and I will be right by your side, working to ensure you capture the images you see when you visit this beautiful city.

You can view all of the details about this exciting new workshop here:

It really is going to be a fabulous week.  We hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Ian
